“It’s them! Blast ’em!”
–Stormtrooper, Star Wars: A New Hope
Since it launched, Star Wars™: Legion has grown to encompass iconic units from across the Star Wars saga, including both the Galactic Civil War and the Clone Wars. From grizzled veterans willing to do whatever it takes to defeat the Empire to intimidating special forces units like Imperial Death Troopers, each unit opens new possibilities for its faction, adding variety to your armies while expanding the strategies you can pursue.
Now, both sides of the Galactic Civil War are taking a different approach, outfitting the troops that have formed the backbone of their armies from the very beginning with new weapons and gear with the Imperial Stormtroopers Upgrade Expansion and the Rebel Troopers Upgrade Expansion!
In addition to containing four miniatures featuring different sculpts than those found in either the Star Wars: Legion Core Set or their respective Unit Expansions, these Upgrade Expansions also include upgrade cards featuring new heavy weapons and personnel options, giving you even more power to customize these units.
These upgrades can be seamlessly incorporated into your existing Stormtrooper and Rebel Trooper units to suit your strategy. At the same time, the heavy weapons miniatures can also be assembled with their standard weapons, giving you even more sculpts to choose from as you create your units! Join us today as we take a closer look at the new ways you can outfit some of the Galactic Civil War’s most iconic troops!
Shock and Awe
The E-11 blaster rifle may be the weapon most closely associated with the Empire’s ubiquitous Stormtroopers, but it is far from the only weapon they utilize in the field. These troops actually carry a wide range of heavy weaponry into battle, with each new weapon serving its own purpose on the battlefield.
In the Star Wars: Legion Core Set alone, Imperial Stormtroopers could add the long-range power of a DLT-19 Stormtrooper or hammer enemy vehicles with an HH-12 Stormtrooper. The Imperial Stormtroopers Upgrade Expansion adds two more heavy weapons to their arsenal, allowing them to take on an even more specialized role within your army.
Rebel units are known for their ability to dodge incoming fire, but a T-21 Stormtrooper gives their unit a better chance of hitting their targets no matter how quick they move. Sometimes, though, you need to target an enemy at longer range. During those moments, an RT-97C Stormtrooper can unleash a torrent of fire against an enemy that thought it was safe.
But heavy weapons aren’t the only way for Stormtroopers to mix up their tactics. Although their stark white armor makes it hard to discern one from another, specially trained Stormtroopers can bring benefits to the entire unit. Every corps unit risks becoming rattled in the thick of battle, but a Stormtrooper Captain assuming command can keep their troops steady in the face of adversity. Better yet, a Stormtrooper Captain brings much needed discipline to their unit, adding a valuable training icon to the unit’s upgrade bar. This opens the door for them to freely Duck and Cover from enemy fire without worrying about being suppressed during their own activation provided a nearby commander keeps them from panicking.
While they may lack the leadership abilities of a Captain, a Stormtrooper Specialist can contribute in their own way. This mini can spot targets for the unit, helping them fire more accurately. They also give the unit the option of equipping additional gear, making the unit more versatile. Combining some Grappling Hooks with Environmental Gear, for instance, makes the unit highly mobile—and all the more threatening to the enemy.
The Rebellion’s greatest strength is its ability to draw beings from every planet to its ranks. Banding together to fight the Empire, these soldiers do much more than diversify the units they’re a part of. They also bring a wide variety of weaponry into battle beyond the standard A-280 blaster rifle, helping Rebel Trooper units across the galaxy adapt to changing battle conditions.
The Star Wars: Legion Core Set already gave Rebel Troopers two powerful options to deal with common battlefield situations. The Rebel Alliance knows that its troops are likely to face powerful Imperial vehicles any time they engage Imperial troops, and an MPL-57 Ion Trooper can prove invaluable when they do. Likewise, the Empire has entire legions of troops at its command, and a single Z-6 Trooper can quickly help the Rebels even the odds.
Despite these powerful options, Rebel Trooper units can contribute to their armies in even more ways with two new heavy weapons. An Ithorian equipped with an SX-21 scatterblaster, for instance, makes their entire unit extremely lethal at close range, even against enemies sporting thick armor. On the other hand, a Theelin DLT-20A Trooper can not only target enemies from a distance, they can also punch through armor and cover with a critical hit.
But some problems can’t be resolved with heavy weapons alone. One of the biggest challenges the Rebel Alliance faces is keeping the fires of rebellion burning even when all hope seems lost. An Ishi Tib Rebel Trooper Captain makes these moments a little easier for the troops under their command to bear. What’s more, combining their ability with the training slot they provide can help the captain lead their unit on an Offensive Push toward a critical objective.
On the other hand, Rebel Troopers are trained to nimbly dodge incoming attacks and a Gran Rebel Trooper Specialist can further complement this ability. Just like the Stormtrooper Specialist, they also open up new possibilities by giving their unit the chance to carry more gear. With their defensive capabilities enhanced by the Rebel Trooper Specialist, your unit might be more inclined to head deep into enemy territory loaded with some Recon Intel and Emergency Stims to help them along the way.

I did a quick write-up of things I found interesting during today’s FFG Live: Ask Me Anything with Alex and Luke:
-The Clone Wars Core Set will release worldwide on Oct 18th
-The Card Packs will release on Oct. 18th
-No release date for Dewbacks but will release ASAP
-More Competitive Battle Cards will be added to the game “Sooner than later”
-We may eventually get custom commanders
-We will see more cross faction units
-We will most likely see Commander Coby and all “popular characters” added to the game; at least that’s the goal
-Phase 1 Clone Troopers feature the furthest they could push PVC plastic. Phase 2 Clone Troopers will be hard plastic, but will not be as customizable as the Phase 1s, but as Legion continues to grow with hard plastic there will be some “really cool figures in the near future” and you’ll be able to “customize them in a lot of cool ways”
-They are moving away from 1 for 1 releases and moving towards more thematic releases, e.i. themes build on movies, TV shows, certain battles, locations, different media, fridge elements that don’t fit anywhere else
-They will consider all possible factions including Scum and Villainy. They hinted that The Mandalorian could help flesh that faction out
-Subfactions are still on the table, but it sounds like the game needs to grow more to warrant them Continue reading →
–C-3PO, Star Wars: A New Hope
Sometimes, an escape pod crash-landing on a desolate desert planet is all it takes to alter the fate of the galaxy. R2-D2 and C-3PO set the classic Star Wars trilogy in motion when they launched themselves from the Tantive IV to the scorching hot surface of Tatooine, and soon, you can play out the early stages of their desperate mission to restore hope to the galaxy. Fantasy Flight Games is happy to announce the Crashed Escape Pod Battlefield Expansion for Star Wars™: Legion!
More than just a terrain piece or objectives, the unpainted, hard plastic crashed escape pod miniature and hard plastic R2-D2 and C-3PO miniatures you’ll find in this expansion are an invitation to join two of the Star Wars saga’s most iconic droids on their adventures across the galaxy. These miniatures can play a central role in two distinct scenarios outlined by six new battle cards. Alternatively, four unit cards give you the chance to add both R2-D2 and C-3PO to your Rebel or Republic armies.
Read on for more information on the Crashed Escape Pod Battlefield Expansion!
The Droids You’re Looking For
Escape pods are a standard feature on warships across the galaxy and when opposing troops abandon ship, it’s not uncommon for a battle to spill over to a planet’s surface. Whether your troops are investigating the wreckage or using it for cover, the escape pod miniature is this expansion is sure to enhance any battlefield, adding even more thematic flair to your Star Wars: Legion battles.
But escape pods can carry more than just ground troops. They’re also a good way to get sensitive information off a ship before it falls into the wrong hands. During these occasions, both sides are likely to do whatever they can to recover this data, including deploying troops to the crash site. As a result, the Crashed Escape Pod Battlefield Expansion also contains six battle cards that make the escape pod the focal point of two different scenarios.
In the first scenario, the escape pod makes a crash-landing on a planet’s surface at the end of Round 1, and the droids it carries become the prime objective of both armies. In the second, two droids carrying vital intel find themselves hopelessly lost in the unforgiving wilderness and both sides start a desperate search. Whoever finds and extracts the droids could well turn the tide of the war.
No matter which scenario you choose to play, the C-3PO and R2-D2 miniatures included in this Battlefield Expansion make a perfect alternative to the objective tokens found in both the Star Wars: Legion Core Set and the Clone Wars Core Set. This may help bring these iconic droids to life as objectives on your battlefields, but it is far from their only use.
C-3PO and R2-D2 formed an unbreakable bond that carried them through the Clone Wars and the Galactic Civil War, and this Battlefield Expansion allows you to help them carry out their secret missions as part of the Galactic Republic or the Rebel Alliance. In addition to four unit cards that invite you to add these iconic droids to your armies, three Operative command cards help R2-D2 unlock a wide variety of devices hidden within his casing.
We’ll take a closer look at everything included in the Crashed Escape Pod Battlefield Expansion—including R2-D2, C-3PO, and both scenarios—in a future preview!
On a Secret Mission
A single escape pod crashing to the surface of Tatooine set off a chain of events that changed the Star Wars galaxy forever. When the Crashed Escape Pod Battlefield Expansion is released in the first quarter of 2020, it can be the springboard for your own Star Wars: Legion stories!
Add a crashed escape pod to your battlefields, available now for pre-order from your local retailer or online through our website with free shipping in the continental United States!
“When gone am I, the last of the Jedi will you be.”
—Yoda, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi
The path of a Jedi is difficult. One must sacrifice much if they hope to become a master of the Force and fully commit themself to peace and tranquility if they are to resist the sway of the dark side. This is especially true of Luke Skywalker, who not only endeavored to become a Jedi during an era when the order had been all but exterminated, but who also had to confront the legacy of evil granted by his father, the infamous Darth Vader.
Despite these obstacles, Skywalker became one of the most renowned Jedi Knights in the galaxy, using the Force at pivotal moments throughout the Galactic Civil War to secure crucial victories for the Rebel Alliance. After using the Force in battles from Hoth to Endor, Luke Skywalker is ready to lend his power to your Rebel armies with the Luke Skywalker Operative Expansion for Star Wars™: Legion!
This expansion contains one unpainted, finely detailed soft plastic Luke Skywalker miniature wielding his iconic lightsaber along with a unit card and all the tokens you need to deploy him into battle. Already a highly skilled combatant, three command cards that can be used interchangeably with Luke Skywalker’s command cards from the Star Wars: Legion Core Set allow Luke Skywalker to augment his prodigious abilities, giving you even more options for using him in the midst of a heated battle.
Finally, four upgrade cards invite you to unlock Luke Skywalker’s full potential, giving you access to even more Force powers and training. Read on for a closer look at everything included in the Luke Skywalker Operative Expansion!
Legacy of the Force
Over the course of the Star Wars saga, Luke Skywalker has evolved from a farmboy on the backwater planet of Tatooine to hero of the Rebellion and, finally, powerful Jedi Knight. As he has made this progression, he has also transitioned from field commander leading Rebel attacks to a solitary figured focused on developing his skills with the Force. It should be no surprise, then, that the more experienced Luke Skywalker found in this Operative Expansion takes a different approach to combat than the plucky blossoming Force user found in the Star Wars: Legion Core Set.
Once wielding both his father’s lightsaber and his own DL-44 blaster pistol, the new version of Luke Skywalker now focuses solely on melee combat with a lightsaber. But Skywalker has honed his skills with this weapon, becoming a true force to be reckoned with. Not only has he shown his worthiness of the title of Jedi Knight by constructing his own lightsaber, this version of Luke Skywalker is also more proficient with the weapon and has even greater potential for dealing damage.
A lightsaber is a powerful weapon capable of dealing devastating damage to almost any target, but a true Jedi only uses their skills to defend themselves from agressive foes. As a result, the Operative version of Luke Skywalker continues to be able to use their blade to deflect incoming blaster fire that would otherwise pierce through his defenses. But a trained Jedi also knows when to break off a fight and Luke Skywalker can now disengage from a single enemy unit that may be stalling his progress or blocking his escape.
Beyond its obvious benefits in combat, Skywalker’s deepening understanding of the Force has not only broadened the potential ways he can use the Force during a battle, it also means that he can use these abilities more frequently. Far from simply enhancing himself, Luke Skywalker can call upon the power of the Force to aid the entire Rebel army. If he lets the Force flow through him into his fellow troops, he can help guide the actions of others, even those who do not share his Force sensitivity.
This isn’t the only way that Luke Skywalker can contribute to your overall strategy, of course. In addition to growing more powerful in the Force, the rigors of Jedi training have toughened him and made him all the more courageous. When they meet on the battlefield, then, enemies often find that Skywalker is Full of Surprises and can escape seemingly impossible situations.
At the same time, a Jed Knight like Luke Skywalker can use the Force to influence the weak-minded, bending them to his will. While this power can be used on Skywalker’s fellow Rebels to grant them extra moves and attacks, he can also use it to give the enemy army a new master to serve, potentially convincing them to attack members of their own army. Similarly, a Jedi must learn to control their aggression, and if Luke Skywalker resists the urge to give into ange r, he can prevent nearby enemy troopers from attacking as well.
Use the Force
As the first Jedi Knight in a generation, Luke Skywalker has brought hope to countless beings who yearn for the return of peace and justice to galaxy. With the Luke Skywalker Operative Expansion, you can deploy him to your Star Wars: Legion battles at the height of his powers.
